About Motorcycle service
To earn a California motorcycle license (M1 or M2), most riders take a skills test on a closed course, given by appointment at a DMV field office. Which offices offer it can change, so the DMV's online appointment system — where you start a drive test appointment and choose Motorcycle — is the authoritative place to see availability and to book. Many riders instead complete an approved California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP) course, which waives the DMV skills test entirely.
For the skills test you must provide a registered, insured motorcycle in safe operating condition and wear a DOT-approved helmet. A CMSP course waives this requirement.
