A Class C license is California’s standard driver’s license — the one almost every adult driver carries. It authorizes you to drive ordinary passenger vehicles and is also the most-used adult photo ID in the state. If you drive a regular car, this is the license you need.

This guide covers exactly what a Class C lets you drive, who needs one, what it costs, and the step-by-step to get your first one. For the full application walkthrough including the permit process, see our first-license guide.

Who needs a Class C license

You need a Class C if you drive any ordinary passenger vehicle on California roads and you’re not operating a commercial vehicle or motorcycle. It’s the baseline credential for:

  • Driving your own car, van, or pickup
  • Most rideshare and delivery work in a standard vehicle
  • Towing a small trailer (under 10,000 lbs)

If you ride a motorcycle you also need a Class M endorsement, and if you drive a commercial vehicle over 26,000 lbs you need a CDL.

What a Class C lets you drive

A Class C covers vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) up to 26,000 lbs, including:

  • Passenger cars, vans, and SUVs
  • Pickup trucks
  • A vehicle towing a trailer or vehicle under 10,000 lbs
  • A housecar (motorhome) 40 feet or less

It does not cover motorcycles, commercial trucks over 26,000 lbs, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, or vehicles for hire carrying more than 10 passengers — those need a different license class.

How to apply — step by step

Gather your documents
Proof of identity, your SSN, and two proofs of California residency. For a REAL ID, you also prove legal presence — no SSN document is needed (the DMV verifies your number).
2
Apply at a DMV office
Submit form DL 44, pay the $46 fee, and take the vision test. Find an office ›
3
Pass the knowledge test
36 questions, 30 correct to pass. Prep with a free practice test.
4
Practice on a permit (under 18) or book the road test
Drivers under 18 hold a permit for 6 months and log 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night).
5
Pass the behind-the-wheel test
A 15–20 minute road test with a DMV examiner. Pass and you get a temporary paper license; the card arrives by mail.

Frequently asked questions

What can I drive with a California Class C license?
Passenger cars, vans, and pickups with a gross vehicle weight rating up to 26,000 lbs, plus a trailer under 10,000 lbs. For larger vehicles you need a non-commercial Class A/B or a CDL.
How old do I have to be to get a Class C license?
16, after holding a permit for six months and logging 50 hours of supervised driving if you're under 18. The permit itself is available at 15½. See the first-license guide.
How much does a Class C license cost?
$46 for a new license or renewal. A duplicate is $37 and an address change is free. See the full fee table.
Is a Class C license the same as a REAL ID?
Not automatically. A Class C can be issued as a standard "Federal Non-Compliant" license or upgraded to a REAL ID. The REAL ID version needs extra documents but costs the same $46.
Can I renew my Class C license online?
Most drivers under 70 can renew online if they hold a current CA license, have no suspensions, and aren't upgrading to REAL ID. Drivers 70+ renew in person.
Do I need a Class C license to drive for work?
For most jobs, yes — a standard Class C is enough unless you drive a commercial vehicle over 26,000 lbs, transport hazmat, or carry passengers commercially, which require a CDL.
