How to check your California DMV status

Quick facts TL;DR · 5 bullets
The DMV has real online checkers for two things: the status of a license/ID card the DMV is processing, and a vehicle registration.
The registration check is the only one that needs no login — just your plate and the last 5 of the VIN (or the owner's name).
There's no separate REAL ID tracker — a REAL ID is issued as an ordinary DL/ID card, so its progress shows in the card-status tool.
And there's no "is my license suspended?" button — you confirm a suspension by reading your driver record, where departmental actions appear.
This page only points you to the official dmv.ca.gov tools — it doesn't check anything itself.
Card status Real tool DL/ID# + MyDMV
Registration status Real tool — no login
Driver record $2 via MyDMV
REAL ID No separate tracker use card status
Suspension Read your driver record

This page is a map, not a tool — it points you to the official dmv.ca.gov checkers and tells you honestly which statuses have a real lookup and which you have to reach a different way. There’s no checker built into this site.

License or ID card status

If you’ve applied for or renewed a driver’s license or ID and you’re waiting on the card, the DMV’s Driver’s License & ID Card Status tool tells you where it is. You’ll need your DL/ID number and a MyDMV sign-in.

One thing to be clear about: this reports the card’s progress through DMV processing — it is not USPS mail tracking, so it won’t show a parcel moving through the postal system. The DMV says to allow a few weeks for the card and to contact them if it hasn’t arrived after 60 days.

Vehicle registration status

The Vehicle Registration Status tool is the one check you can run with no account at all. Enter your license-plate number and one of: the last 5 digits of the VIN, the registered owner’s last name, or a company name. It’s the quickest status to confirm — handy when you’ve renewed and want to see it posted.

Driver record (and checking a suspension)

Your driver record is the document behind two questions people ask. You can order it online through MyDMV for $2.

It’s also how you check a suspension — California has no separate “is my license suspended?” button. A suspension or revocation shows up on the record under departmental actions, so reading the record is the real way to confirm one. If you find a hold, the license suspensions guide covers what comes next.

REAL ID status

There is no standalone REAL ID tracker, and you don’t need one. A REAL ID is issued as an ordinary driver’s license or ID card — so once you’ve applied, its progress shows in the same Driver’s License & ID Card Status tool above. If a site or search result promises a special “REAL ID status checker,” it’s pointing at that same card-status lookup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the status of my California license or ID card?
Use the DMV's Driver's License & ID Card Status tool at dmv.ca.gov — you'll need your DL/ID number and a MyDMV sign-in. It reports where the card is in DMV processing; it is not USPS mail tracking. The DMV suggests allowing a few weeks, and contacting them if a card hasn't arrived after 60 days.
Can I check my vehicle registration status without an account?
Yes — the Vehicle Registration Status tool is the one check that needs no login. Enter your license-plate number plus one of: the last 5 of the VIN, the registered owner's last name, or a company name.
How do I check if my driver's license is suspended?
There's no standalone suspension lookup. Order your driver record ($2 online through MyDMV) — any suspension or revocation appears under "departmental actions." See license suspensions for what to do next.
Is there a separate REAL ID application tracker?
No. A REAL ID is issued as a regular driver's license or ID card, so its progress shows in the same Driver's License & ID Card Status tool — there isn't a distinct REAL ID tracker to look for.
What do I actually need to check a status?
It depends on which one: registration needs only your plate + last-5 VIN (no login); the card-status tool and a driver record both need a MyDMV account (and the record costs $2). Set up MyDMV first if you'll use either of those.
