Most California drivers can renew online, but sometimes you need to renew in person — to clear a registration hold, make a correction, or walk out with your sticker the same day. You have three in-person paths: a DMV office, a self-service DMV Now kiosk, or a AAA branch if you’re a member.

When you must renew in person

Renew in person when online and mail won’t work or won’t be fast enough:

  • You need the sticker today (a kiosk prints it on the spot)
  • There’s a registration hold — unpaid citations, an insurance gap, or a smog issue
  • You need a name or address correction as part of the renewal
  • The vehicle isn’t in your name yet (finish the title transfer first)
  • You want to pay cash, which online and mail can’t accept

Documents you'll need

1
What to bring
  • Renewal notice (or your current registration card)
  • Smog certificate only if it isn't on file electronically
  • Proof of insurance if your insurer hasn't reported it
  • Payment — cash, check, debit, or credit
Heads up.At a DMV Now kiosk you mainly need your plate number and payment; the sticker prints immediately.

In person you can pay with cash, check, debit, or credit; card payments (debit and credit) add a 2.3% service fee, so cash or check avoids it. Estimate the total with the fee calculator.

How to apply — step by step

At a DMV office (a kiosk is faster for a simple renewal).

1
Choose office, kiosk, or AAA
A DMV Now kiosk prints the sticker on the spot; an office handles holds and corrections; AAA serves members. Find a location ›
2
Make an appointment if visiting an office
Walk-ins are accepted but appointments are much faster. Book at dmv.ca.gov.
3
Bring your notice and payment
Hand over the renewal notice or registration card; pay any fees, including a late penalty if your tags expired.
4
Clear any hold
If a citation or smog issue caused a hold, resolve it at the counter (or beforehand) so the renewal can process.
5
Get your sticker
Offices, kiosks, and AAA all issue the year sticker the same day — place it on your rear plate.
